Severn to Scholey Connection
Myra Severn, daughter of Joseph and Louisa Severn marred Jack Scholey and their descendants are many.
Myra Severn was born on the 14 June, baptised 3 July 1892 at St Peter's church, Conisbrough. She was named after her grandmother Mira (Sissons). She started work as a domestic servant.
She married Jack (baptised John "Jack" Scholey) at the United Methodist Chapel in Mexborough in January 1912.
Jack was born in Sheffield 25 Sep 1893 but his family moved to Mexborough when he was two years old. He was a miner and worked for eighteen years at the Denaby and Manvers collieries. Audrey, his daughter, well remembers him coming home from work to 40 Cowper Street covered in coal dust and bathing in the tin bath that was kept specially for this occasion. She remembers that the men from the pit had black eyes or 'pit muck' as it was called. This dust was permanently ingrained into the skin around their eyes and highlighted by the pale sallow faces underneath.

Jack and Myra lived firstly in Herbert Street, then moved to Cowper Road. Myra was kept busy bringing up her large family. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing and playing the piano and organ, because like most of her brothers and sisters she was very musical.
Jack, like so many others, had an accident in the pit (a head injury) and had to seek alternative employment. He became an insurance agent. The family had a brass plaque mounted on the front of the house that read "Royal Liver Assurance". Now he no longer had 'pit muck' but wore a smart black jacket and black pin-striped trousers. He even wore 'spats' at one stage, Ada reported.
During the First World War he joined the Royal Engineers and was a sapper in France. Later on, during the Second World War he was a member of the Special Constabulary, a job he continued until his retirement. He was awarded the Coronation Medal for his tireless service.
After he retired he was kept busy with his two allotments, Muriel, his daughter well remembers having to sell flowers and tomatoes to a man from the market.
Both Jack and Myra died of coronary thrombosis - Jack on the 18th May 1967 and Myra on the 24th May 1970.

Edith Scholey 1913 - 1933 & Robert Webster
Edith was Jack and Myra's first child. She was born 13 August 1913 married Fred Beeby who died of throat cancer in World War Two. She married secondly Robert "Bob" Webster. Edith and Bob had two children:
David Beeby was a scaffolder in Leeds. He fell and fractured his skull when he was 45 leaving a wife and two children:

Lyn Webster married Mr Senior
Barbara Beeby. Barbara's partner is Tony Ellis who owns a china clay company - Watts, Blake & Benn and they and moved to Devon. Tony is from Wath-upon-Dearne and they have two sons:
David Ellis married Sarah (who already had a son John and I believe they now have another child. David works as a sales representative in the wine business
John Ellis married Wanda Edith and her family moved to Torquay.
Louisa Scholey 1915 - & Charles Edward Thomas
Louisa Scholey born 5 May 1915 at 35 Herbert Street and baptised 13 June 1915 at Doncaster Road United Methodist Chapel. After leaving school she went into service in Manchester and was married at the age of 21.
Louie married Charles Edward Thomas 26 Dec. 1935. He was born 7 Aug 1907 in Scunthorpe and came to live at 22 Kelvin Street, Mexborough when his parents moved there. In the 1939 census Ted was employed in the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate of the Air Ministry, Ted worked in the Powder Works during World War Two - in fact was in charge after the war ended, then moved to Parkgate employed at the steelworks as a deseamer. He died at the age of 66. Louie lived at 10 Kelvin Street and supplied many of the photos in this section. I am very grateful for her hospitality and stories,

Louie and Edward had 2 daughters:
Maureen Thomas born 8 June 19??. During World War Two she worked in the ICI Powder Works an then married a farmer - Kenneth Hodgson from Skegness. They live at Mareham Lee Fen and have a son:
Andrew Hodgson. Andrew is a Financial Advisor with NatWest Bank and lives in Newark.
Margaret Thomas born when? married John Rose from Denaby. Jack was a miner but when the pit closed he became a security guard at Meadowhall Shopping Centre - pronounced ’ Medderall’ in Yorkshire accent ) and then at Batley’s Cash and Carry. Margaret trained as a hairdresser and opened her own hairdressing salon in Queen Street Swinton in 1976. Margaret and Jack have two children:
Julie Rose a signwriter who married Grant Adey. They have two daughters and live in Thorne:

Muriel Scholey 1921 - & Stephen Waugh
Muriel Scholey born 13 March 1921 at 35 Herbert Street was baptised 19 April 1921 at Doncaster Road United Methodist Chapel. After leaving school Muriel, along with a number of her cousins moved over to Lancashire to find work during World War Two. It was there she met Stephan Waugh and they were married 13 April 1941.
Stephen was born on 4th September 1920 at 18 Buile Street Higher Broughton in Lancashire attended the local C of E Elementary School. After they were married they lived at 11 Squire Street, Higher Broughton in Salford, later moving to 9 Guy Street in the same town. Later still they moved to 255 Bolton Road, Pendleton.
Stephen served as a gunner with the Royal Artillery in 1941 and was discharged in 1942, after which he became a butcher, eventually owning his own shop.
Muriel enjoyed sewing, embroidery, painting, upholstery, flower arranging and swimming. Stephen's hobbies included snooker, swimming and eating! Stephen and Muriel had two children:
Roger Stephen Waugh b 7th September 1944 in Higher Broughton. He is an HGV driver and he enjoys making models. Roger is married to Margaret Hastings. Muriel and Steve

John "Jack" Scholey
John "Jack" Scholey born 14 September 1924 at 35 Herbert Street, Mexborough and baptised 5 December 1924 at Doncaster Road United Methodist Chapel. After leaving school he had a varied career in a number of jobs, some of which included: chocolate boy at Royal Cinema; Holmes pop factory; Walls pork sausages; Manvers coking ovens and bar manager at a local nightclub.
During World War Two he met Marjorie Seagrave at the Empress Cafe where Marjorie’s sister, Mary, worked. Marjorie was born 2 May 1925 the daughter of Florence Emily and John Charles Seagrave. She attended Roman Terrace school and left it in September 1939. She was living at 29 Spencer Street, Mexborough. In January 1940 she started work at Altringham General Hospital as a cleaner.

Marjorie and Jack were married 15 March 1942 at Mexborough Parish Church and set up home at 62 Cowper Road, Mexborough. In 1949 they were at 40 Pitt Street. Marjorie took up an apprenticeship in hairdressing and bought her own salon in Main Street which she ran from 1952 - 68
From his prior experiences Jack had the experience to take on the management of one of Mexborough’s public houses, the old Masons Arms (now the Falcon). Later still he moved on to the bigger Reresby Arms at Denaby. Jack finished his working life at Fletcher, Sutcliffe & Wylde the coal cutters.
Jack contracted Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and died 6 March 1993. Marjorie did 2 May 1925

Jack and Marjorie had 4 children:
Vivienne Scholey born 2 May 1950. She attended Garden Street Infant and Junior School then Dolcliffe Road. At the age of 15 she left to help her mum in the hairdressers shop. After that she worked at Crosbys and GEC. She had known David Slater for some time before she married him on 29 July 1972. David was born 1 December 1947, the son of Kathleen Baker and William Slater.
David attended Garden Street Infant and Junior school, then went on to Mexborough Grammar School. He has had a wide range of employment including the Parkgate Iron and Steel Company, GEC, Steetley Refrectories and manager of WM Braitley, He followed in his father-in-law’s footsteps and took on the management of the old Masons Arms pub (now the Falcon). All in all David is a jack of all trades and can turn his hand to almost anything.
David and Vivienne had two daughters:
Nicola Slater born 30 January 1976. She worked for John Carr Joinery.
Louise Slater born 31 January 1978 and worked for Argos.

Audrey Scholey 4 July 1930 and Reginald "Reg" Addy
Audrey Scholey born 29 January 1929 at 35 Herbert Street and baptised at Doncaster Road United Methodist Chapel on 24 February 1929 in Mexborough. Audrey made me feel very welcome when I visited her and this is her story.
" At the age of 13 my dad sent me for typing and shorthand lessons which cost the princely sum of 2/6d a week - a fairly hefty sum out of a miner's wages. After leaving school at the age of 14, I worked as a cashier in a dress shop receiving 10/- a week, then, with the urging of my shorthand teacher, I applied and joined the wages department at Manvers Main colliery. Along with 4 other girls I was sent to Sheffield to learn how to work the new 'Calculating Machines' - the forerunners of computers. I remember my childhood as being very happy, even though we were poor."
"Saturday was the best day of the week. All the children were given a ha'penny (half an old penny) until they were 7 or 8 when this was increased to a penny. Sunday on the other hand was a serious day - church, under the authoritarian eye of Grandad Severn (Joseph) at the Methodist chapel. No fun allowed here. All os us children were issued with a 'star card' a record of attendance. I remember 'Our Jack" used to ask me to get his card stamped and then he would sneak off to "The Glen' - at the top of Herbert Street - a favourite haunt of the children. "Our Jack' was a bit of a rogue - but a likeable one," she said,
Audrey met and then and married Reginald "Reg"Addy , who came from Wath-on-Dyrne. Reg was born 4 July 1931 and became a mechanic.
Audrey and Reg were married on 11th November 1950 at Mexborough Parish Church. After their marriage they lived in Beech Road, Swinton for two or three years, then Reg got a job in Halifax and they moved there. Unfortunately after 18 months, the job folded and Reg was made redundant. Reg and Audrey went into shopkeeping until Reg had to give this up due to back trouble. For the next 10 year drove a van for the hospital and retired in July of 1994. Reg suffered from back pain. Reg died in 28 Nov 2011. Audrey died 5 Mar 2016.
Reg and Audrey had two children:
Christopher Trevor Addy born 1 February 1954 and married Christine Dearden who works at Halifax Building Society. They have a son:

Ivy Scholey 1930 - 1995
I know little about Ivy and was unable to find out much when I was doing the research.
Ivy Scholey born 23rd February 1930, baptised at Doncaster Road United Methodists Chapel 16 March 1930. She married first to Jack Jagger, secondly to Eric Cresswell and thirdly to Stanley Ardron. Ivy enjoyed knitting, needlework and was a voluntary helper. She lived at Swinton, near Mexborough and died 5 November 1995. Ivy had two children:

Maurice Scholey 1933 & Joyce
Maurice Scholey born 23rd February 1933 at 35 Herbert Street and baptised 12 March 1933 at Doncaster Road United Methodist Chapel. married Joyce Mary Armes, since divorced. Maurice was a butcher at Palfreymans in Wath- upon-Dearne, then had his own shop - Scholey’s Butchers, in Swinton. When the marriage broke up, he gave up his job to move to Pershaw near Evesham to be with the children. Maurice then lived at 1 Eastwood Court,
Fitzwilliam Street, Rotherham.
Maurice and Joyce had two children, but the son changed his name from Scholey to something else and the family has not kept in touch. Please correct this if it is incorrect - I think Maurice’s son is Timothy who wanted to join the RAF but suffered a serious accident on his motorbike. He is now a director of a printing firm - Webster-Bidder and he lives in Devon. He has a daughter:
Susan Elizabeth aged 12.
