George Bliss 1837 -

George Bliss, son of James Bliss and Ann Foster was born in 1837. In 1861 he was a a print seller in  Harrow.  However he joined the family wine and spirits business and by 1881 he is listed as a retired licensed victualler at Tower House. Hastings St Clement, Priory Road. He married Esther Maria Standen (she baptised 7 Nov 1852 St Marylebone Christchurch) at St Stephens Hammersmith 18 Mar 1875. On his marriage certificate his occupation is Gentleman. His address was 94 Westbourne Park Road, Esther’s father was Matthew Standen, Gentleman (made his money as a butcher). ‘The pictures on the following page show where George lived.

This is a huge house for just 4 people but this is where they lived.

After George died we find that Esther was the proprietor of a lodging house at 1 Undercliffe, Hastings in 1881. She probably didn’t own the house (I could be wrong, because 10 years later in 1901 she is at a different address. The 1891 census has Esther, her two kids, a servant and three boarders. No 1 is to either the building behind the van or the one to the left of it.
